Innogy chief leaves with ‘immediate effect’ after profit warning

20171225

The chief executive of Innogy, Peter Terium, has left the German energy group with “immediate effect”, less than a week after issuing a profit warning that sent its shares tumbling. Mr Terium led Innogy through its spin-off from German utility RWE last year and subsequent stock market flotation, but the group said late on Tuesday that its supervisory board “sees the necessity for greater emphasis on cost discipline and a more focused growth and investment strategy”. Uwe Tigges, chief human resources officer, would take over as chief executive on a temporary basis, the company said. Mr Terium’s sudden departure comes less than a week after Innogy blamed continued problems at lossmaking UK household supply business Npower for a profit warning. Npower is one of the six biggest electricity and gas suppliers in the UK market but like many of its larger rivals has been losing market share to newer entrants that have been using their lower cost bases to lure away customers. Npower, which is on course to make its third annual loss in a row in 2017, had been trying to cut costs, but Innogy admitted last week that those savings would be insufficient to offset a shortfall in earnings. Innogy is seeking to exit the challenging UK market. In November, it announced a deal with SSE, the London-listed utility, to merge and split their British household supply businesses into a separate company ahead of a regulatory clampdown. The UK government is seeking to introduce a cap on energy prices for the majority of households, which will hit margins at the biggest suppliers in particular. UK politicians have called for the deal between Npower and SSE to be closely scrutinised by competition authorities. Analysts said that last week’s profit warning from Innogy, which sent its shares down 13 per cent, was particularly disappointing as it was issued just a month after the group had published third-quarter results. Werner Brandt, chairman of the supervisory board, thanked Mr Terium for his “significant contribution” to the successful restructuring of RWE and said his departure was by “friendly agreement” with the supervisory board. Mr Terium had held a number of positions at RWE since 2003 and served as chief executive of the group until April 2016, when he took on the same role at Innogy.
