PKN Orlen uses real-time operational data to connect energy assets

With technology moving faster than at any time in human history, utilities are turning toward data platforms and analytics to fine tune power delivery or move toward predictive maintenance to help the bottom line. With a proliferation of devices however and a lack of interoperability between systems and processes, accurately identifying how to interpret the numbers and where to focus operational improvements remains a challenge. It’s not just about big data but smart data. This was a challenge that Polish oil and energy group PKN Orlen was determined to crack. PKN Orlen, the largest industrial producer of electricity and heat in Poland, has integrated downstream assets in three countries across Central Europe and energy assets in nine locations and three countries so required an integrated, collaborative and long-term approach. OperationalDataMonitoringOSIsoft PKN Orlen has energy assets spread across three European countries so needed to consolidate data on one platform. At the OSIsoft EMEA users conference in London in October, Pawel Vogtt, Finance Director and Head of Power and Heat Performance at PKN Orlen, highlighted the three-fold challenge: Need for a single platform and integrated view of all real-time data to implement net power generation monitoring of the Orlen group power plants. An online live analysis of power plant performance. Corporate level production and financial management, to enable business critical decision making. It is one thing to use sensors and platforms to track trends and have engineers monitor technical details, observes Vogtt, but the aim was to make this more meaningful. He says: "Could we move towards a system that looked at the economic impact of these trends and engaged at a management and corporate level? What is the financial cost of the performance variables being tracked and how can they be measured to make business decisions?" Operational Data Monitoring Assets The energy company needed a single platform view of the group"s power plants data in order to implement net power generation monitoring. Partnering on real-time data monitoring To connect the sensor-based data and real-time information, PKN Orlen turned to long-time partner OSIsoft for the solution, leveraging this data to provide more efficiency and reliability at plant level and reduce costs. Used by 65% of the Fortune 500 and with over 1.5 billion data streams, The OSIsoft PI System is deployed in over 19,000 sites and more than 125 countries. The system works in 5 key stages: Capture. Storing millions of data points, the PI System centralises both time series and event based data to unify the data points and present back one version of events Search and analyse. Comparing historical and real time information allows for performance comparisons and uncover new insights that would have previously been lost. Visualise. Translating complex data and providing further context is key if business decisions will be successfully made. Easy to digest visualisations and dashboards are available across multiple devices to get information at the click of a button. Share. Using this tools to foster collaboration and engagement. Operational Intelligence. With each step leading to a deeper understanding, organisations can then make proactive decisions, allowing them to optimise processes, improve efficiency and reduce cost. For PKN Orlen, the PI System created the visualistions that moved real-time data from technical information to business decisions. As Vogtt confirmed in his presentation that the group can readily see: Marginal cost of el. Production Variable cost of el. Once any of the parameters drop, management can drill down into each power plant and look at detailed information which caused reduction of one of the KP’s. For example, they can see plots of net electrical efficiency as a function of net electrical load, electrical load vs gas consumption or each plant’s EBIT by minute and hour. Using the PI System as an intelligence tool has allowed Orlen to more accurately ascribe costs and make real-time performance decisions, driving deeper analysis and more advanced algorithms, says . Operational data monitoring - benefits Pawel highlighted one of the major benefits of the large-scale implementation has been the ability to use the PI System application as an integrated communications platform. The technical performance of energy assets has bought greater process efficiency and transparency to this team. The monitoring of economic performance has also crucially allowed the more strategic management decisions to be made, bringing in new actors and wider collaboration from business managers and traders. The system has also created additional advantages within the company, with the PI System acting as a catalyst for further company wide automation and business transformation. Vogtt stressed that a further unforeseen advantage was the automatic generation of reports and data tracking leading to reduced labour intensity and greater staff efficiency and is fully expecting further benefits as the OSIsoft product suite further evolves.
