German Q1-Q3 gas-fired power output up 13% on year: BDEW data

20171121

London (Platts)--21 Nov 2017 608 am EST/1108 GMT Production from German gas-fired power plants in the first nine months of 2017 was 13% higher than the same period last year, according to data from German energy lobby group BDEW, which is more comprehensive than daily aggregated TSO data which underreports smaller units. Comprehensive BDEW data shows 62 TWh vs 23 TWh in TSO data September shows second on-year decline in row for gas Power demand up 0.7% on year at 412.1 TWh for first nine months In September, the most recent month for which the BDEW data is available, gas output dropped 1.5% on the year to 6.24 TWh, the second on-year drop in a row, it said. Total output from gas plants for the first nine months of 2017 totaled 62.23 TWh, according to the BDEW data. This compared to just 23 TWh in the daily aggregated TSO data reported on EEX Transparency or an already upward revised 34 TWh in similar TSO data from Fraunhofer ISE energy charts. Gas plants have registered the biggest gains across conventional power plants so far this year as generation economics have sharply improved in favor of gas compared to coal amid rising global coal prices. But according to Platts generation spread data, the clean spark spread (CSS) for a 50% efficient German gas plant dropped to minus Eur4.09/MWh by close Monday compared to plus Eur2.62/MWh at the end of October with most coal plants again ahead of gas in the merit order. The on-year declines in August and September for gas are also against the backdrop of very strong gas output last summer after the month-ahead clean spark spread for modern CCGTs moved ahead of the clean dark spread for the oldest coal plants for the first time since around 2011. COAL CLOSURES But pressure remains on the oldest coal-fired power plant to close with RWE and Steag already shutting down a number of units this spring including the 2 GW coal-fired plant at Voerde, while Uniper said it would summer-mothball its Staudinger 5 unit once its new Datteln 4 plant comes online next year. Coal output in September had the biggest on year decline, down 18% at 7.73 TWh with hard-coal output for the first nine months down 12% at 71.3 TWh, the BDEW data shows. Output from Germany"s lignite-fired power plants for the first nine months of 2017 was up 1.6% at 112 TWh, the single biggest source of electricity in Germany, but under intense political pressure to close due to its carbon intensity and other environmental reasons. The BDEW data also confirmed the continued rebound for power demand with total power consumption for the January to September period up 0.7% on the year at 412.14 TWh with renewables (including hydro and biomass) accounting for almost 38% of domestic demand in the first nine months of 2017. Cross-border flows of electricity rose to 81 TWh for the first three quarters with Germany"s net export balance at 37 TWh, the data shows, with Germany on track to remain Europe"s biggest net exporter of electricity for a second year in a row on reduced nuclear output in France which traditionally has been Europe"s biggest power export market.

20171211 Self-healing grids and the future of electrical power

Ист.:

We think nothing of turning on a light or charging our cell phone. These daily activities — and those of a far greater importance — rely on the smooth running of an electrical grid. The U.S. Department of Energy has described the electrical grid as an "interconnected group of power lines and associated equipment." It is used to move electric...
